At more than six minutes in length, its electric intensity forced radio to abandon the three-minute single. Lyrically, the song offers a portrait of a woman’s fall from grace and subsequent social isolation. Dylan’s illustration provides an equally astute visual counterpart to the song’s fallen subject, modelled on Paul Delaroche's 1840 painting of a slouching and defeated Napoleon Bonaparte at Fontainebleau, reflecting the lyrics, ‘You used to be so amused / At Napoleon in rags’. Colour is used unmistakably to project this image of grandeur now gone: his cheeks and knees are flushed and muddied, and his once resplendent coat now appears faded and discoloured.

First album release: Highway 51 Revisited, 1965
