Louise Giovanelli

Louise Giovanelli’s delicately luminous paintings draw on subjects from the canon of Western art and contemporary popular culture which she then suspends in enigmatic and unsettling narratives. Primarily chosen for its formal qualities, her subject matter includes staged photographs, film stills, and sculptural or architectural elements. In Host (2020), Giovaneilli takes a detail from Fra Angelico’s The Mockery Of Christ (1440-41) and replicates it in two near-identical canvases, a recurring process in her work. Elsewhere it is the subject that is duplicated: She portrays Alfred Hitchcock’s muse Tippi Hedren glancing over her shoulder in Arena (2020) and gasping, arguably in ecstasy or fear, in Cameo (2020). For Giovanelli, painting serves as a form of visual slowing down and wants looking at her works to be seen as a form of meditation.
