In Circle in Blue, Ai Weiwei’s iconic middle-finger gesture spreads outwards in a continuous design. He first used the gesture in 1995 in his Study of Perspective series, where he directed it at famous landmarks as a symbol of defiance and freedom of expression. Weiwei believes its power comes from the fact that anyone can make the gesture.
