Recorded during the period of convalescence after his 1966 motorcycle accident, and later transformed in a cover by Jimi Hendrix, ‘All Along the Watchtower’ is the most-performed song of Dylan’s live career – a blistering, twelve-line dialogue between joker and thief, left tantalisingly unresolved. Curiously, Dylan has illustrated the third line of the song – ‘Businessmen, they drink my wine’ – depicting a hushed, book-lined study, with two men in armchairs trading confidences; white-collar executives who exploit and profit off the labour of others. Dylan’s deep blues and burnished reds create a thick, enclosed interior atmosphere, which Tom Piazza has described as ‘claustral’.
First album release: John Wesley Harding, 1967
