Written for his son Jesse and first recorded in 1973 for Planet Waves, ‘Forever Young’ is, in Tom Piazza’s words, ‘one of the most straightforward and heartfelt songs Dylan has ever written’. Rather than portraying these personal origins literally, Dylan’s illustration imagines the song as a performance in a ballroom, sung by a woman adorned in a golden gown, as a small band play behind her. ‘Forever Young’ is transformed from an intimate lullaby into an elegant benediction. Allen Ginsberg openly praised the song, professing that it ‘should be sung every morning by every child in every school in every country.’ Dylan’s illustration conveys something of that communal hope.
