Layne’s Woven Forms are inspired by the Devon coastline and have been evolving for several years. This series of work is a result of intricate layering of different pre-made coloured canes around a molten form that is twisted and, when cold, cut into with a diamond wheel to reveal vibrant colours beneath the surface. The effect is like water over precious stones or the rock with its glimmering colours beneath, reflecting natural growth and corrosion.

After completing a degree in 3D design, Layne found an opportunity to work at Peter Layton’s London Glassblowing Studio, where he has inspired an evolving, vibrant and creative environment. Now producing his work at his home studio, highly equipped for all of his making processes.

Layne quotes, ‘I have always been inspired to create and have the desire to use my hands to see creations forming in front of my eyes. Glass is the ultimate medium for speed. It’s alive and requires constant attention and quick decision-making. Glass is a thrilling material to work with, and with its beautiful qualities such as fluidity,
transparency, and with all its colours, it creates its own inspiration.

Layne reverts to childhood memories, His love for birds and Wishing to have the ability to fly with the power of vision and views of the Landscape. Stratus coastlines with its corroded rock formations, and landscapes with layered horizons, as seen in his series ‘Woven’ and ‘New Horizons’. Work inspired by the vast Fenland skies. His love for
detail is a result of intricate cane work with overlays and fine cutting. Sculpted feathers with light, delicate details have led to large-scale wings named “SOLACE” and his Quill n ink series “Ornithology”

Layne has been invited to exhibit in the UK and worldwide, including the V& A, Saatchi gallery and Ebeltoft glass museum, among artists such as Graysen Perry, Alexander McQueen, Lino Tagliapietra and more. He was also awarded the Bavarian State Prize in 2015 for his Woven series.
