Moving from photography to painting around the turn of the century, David White doesn't set out with a sharp plan. Instead, working rapidly with acrylics on canvas, he follows where the work takes him through an exploration of colour and form.

"I feel that there is a singular image behind my work which I reveal from different perspectives with each painting."

Being drawn towards the notion of horizon, constructing abstract landscapes of scale, David's work is inspired, in turn, by Kandinsky and Richter. Rather than depict, he chooses to gesture variously towards skylines, tundra, waters, cityscapes and the inevitable horizon.

Situating his work in the blurred space between the abstract and the figurative, David's paintings are an invitation to step into imagined landscapes. They suggest a sense of location. Playing with the malleability of acrylic paint, from the texture of impasto to the mercurial character of free-flowing pigment, David's large abstract works evoke far more then the sum of their brushstrokes.
