Richard Prince

Richard Prince (born 1949 in the Panama Canal Zone) is an influential American contemporary artist celebrated for pioneering appropriation art and shaping the intersection of photography, painting and cultural critique. He rose to prominence in the late 1970s as a key member of the Pictures Generation, re-photographing and recontextualising found images from advertising and mass media to explore identity, desire and the construction of meaning in consumer culture. Prince’s iconic series—including his Cowboy, Nurse and Jokes works—challenge traditional notions of authorship and authenticity, making him one of the most provocative figures in late 20th-century and contemporary art. His work has been exhibited internationally in major institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and is held in leading public collections worldwide.
